Tencent XR Team Undergoes Changes, to Introduce Meta Quest 2 Headset

Tencent, one of the largest technology companies in China, has undergone significant changes in its XR (extended reality) department. According to reports, the team has been disbanded, with only a small number of employees retained. However, the company plans to introduce Meta's Oculus Quest 2 VR headset in the future.

Adjusting the Business Development Path

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Tencent XR team had been disbanded. The official response from the company was that they were "changing the business development path and adjusting the relevant teams." The move comes amid growing competition in the XR industry, which includes virtual and augmented reality technologies.

According to 36 Krypton, a news outlet that focuses on the Chinese technology industry, only a small number of employees will be retained in the Tencent XR department. However, the report suggests that the company plans to promote the Meta Quest 2 headset in the future. The specific launch time of the Quest 2 National Bank version in China is still unclear.

Meta Quest 2: A Successful VR Headset

The Oculus Quest 2 is one of the most successful VR headsets in the world. It was released in 2021 and has sold more than 14.8 million units globally, according to IDC data as of June 2022. However, the domestic penetration rate in China is not as high.

XR Research Across Tencent

The report also suggests that Tencent's internal businesses, such as games, WeChat, QQ, office, cloud, and research institutes, are all researching XR. This highlights the growing importance of extended reality in the technology industry, and Tencent's commitment to developing new and innovative XR products.

Tencent Officials Yet to Respond

As of press time, Tencent officials have not responded to the reports of changes in the XR department. However, the company's plans to promote the Meta Quest 2 headset suggest that they remain committed to the development of XR technologies, despite the changes in their organizational structure.
