AMOLED Smartphone Panel Demand to Slow Down in 2022: CINNO Research Report

The global smartphone market is currently experiencing a slump in demand due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the declining global economy. This has resulted in a slowdown in market growth, as consumers have limited purchasing power and mobile phone panels are oversupplied. As a result, the growth rate of demand for AMOLED smartphone panels has also slowed down. According to CINNO Research, the shipment volume of AMOLED smartphone panels in the global market will be about 600 million pieces in 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 10.3%.

Negative growth in Q4 shipments

Quarterly data showed negative growth year-on-year, with a drop of 5% to 14% in Q4. This decline can be attributed to a lack of consumer replacement power and the oversupply of the mobile phone panel market. As a result, the penetration rate of AMOLED smartphone panels in the global market will be 33%, a year-on-year decrease of 1 percentage point in 2022.

South Korea leads in global AMOLED smartphone panel shipments

In terms of global AMOLED smartphone panel shipments in 2022 by region, South Korea accounted for 70.7%, while domestic manufacturers accounted for 29.3%. This marks a 9 percentage point increase from last year's 20.3%, and the share is rapidly rising.

Samsung Display (SDC) sees a decrease in shipments and market share

Samsung Display (SDC) AMOLED smartphone panel shipments were about 380 million pieces, down 21.6% year-on-year. Additionally, its market share narrowed from 72.3% in the same period last year to 63.1%. This is mainly due to the price squeeze from flexible AMOLED panel factories in mainland China, which caused a downward trend in both its shipments and market share.

BOE and LGD experience contrasting fortunes

BOE's AMOLED smartphone panel shipments were about 80 million pieces, a year-on-year increase of 31.1%, and its market share was 13%, a year-on-year increase of 4.1 percentage points, ranking second in the world and first in China. This growth can be attributed to the surge in demand for Apple's new machine orders, which BOE benefited from.

In contrast, LGD's AMOLED smartphone panel shipments were about 50 million units, down 10.0% year-on-year, and its market share was 7.5%, flat year-on-year. LGD's AMOLED panel customer structure is single and highly dependent on Apple mobile phone orders. As a result, its shipments fluctuate significantly with the launch cycle of Apple mobile phones.

Visionox experiences growth in AMOLED smartphone panel shipments

Visionox's (Visionox) AMOLED smartphone panel shipments were about 40 million pieces, a year-on-year increase of 20.8%. Its market share was 6.8%, an increase of 1.8 percentage points year-on-year, ranking fourth in the world and second in China. Thanks to the stable source of orders from major customers, Visionox's AMOLED production line maintains a stable and high utilization rate.
