China's Mobile Phone Shipments Increased in August, with 5G Models Accounting for 82.4%

The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) released its "Domestic Market Mobile Phone Shipment Report for August 2023" today, which showed that mobile phone shipments in the domestic market increased 0.03% year-on-year in August, to 18.985 million units. Of these, 5G mobile phones accounted for 82.4%, with shipments of 15.645 million units, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%.

From January to August 2023, the total mobile phone shipments in the domestic market totaled 167 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 4.5%, of which 5G mobile phone shipments were 133 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 3.8%, accounting for 79.5% of mobile phone shipments during the same period.

In August 2023, 55 new mobile phone models were launched in China, a year-on-year increase of 14.6%, including 30 5G mobile phones, a year-on-year increase of 50.0%, accounting for 54.5% of the number of new mobile phone models launched during the same period.

From January to August 2023, a total of 293 new models were launched, a year-on-year increase of 8.1%, including 133 5G mobile phones, a year-on-year decrease of 5.7%, accounting for 45.4% of the number of new mobile phone models launched during the same period.

In August 2023, domestic brand mobile phone shipments were 16.843 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 5.7%, accounting for 88.7% of mobile phone shipments during the same period; 47 new models were launched, a year-on-year increase of 23.7%, accounting for the number of new mobile phone models launched during the same period 85.5%.

From January to August 2023, domestic brand mobile phone shipments totaled 138 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 8.7%, accounting for 82.7% of mobile phone shipments during the same period; a total of 266 new models were launched, a year-on-year increase of 7.3%, accounting for 82.7% of mobile phone shipments during the same period. 90.8% of the number of new models.

Development of Domestic Smartphones

In August 2023, smartphone shipments were 17.926 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 1.2%, accounting for 94.4% of mobile phone shipments in the same period.

From January to August 2023, smartphone shipments were 160 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 6.7%, accounting for 95.5% of mobile phone shipments in the same period.

In August 2023, 46 new models of smartphones were launched, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%, accounting for 83.6% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period.

From January to August 2023, a total of 247 new smartphone models were launched, a year-on-year increase of 7.9%, accounting for 84.3% of the number of new models launched during the same period.

Analysis

The report shows that the Chinese mobile phone market is still recovering from the pandemic, with overall shipments down slightly year-on-year. However, the 5G segment is growing rapidly, with shipments accounting for more than 80% of the total in August. This is due to the increasing availability of affordable 5G phones and the expanding coverage of 5G networks.

Domestic brands continue to dominate the Chinese mobile phone market, with shipments accounting for over 80% of the total. This is due to their strong brand recognition and innovative products.

The report also shows that the Chinese smartphone market is becoming increasingly competitive, with a large number of new models being launched each month. This is good news for consumers, as it gives them more choices to select from.
