New SD Express Speed Level Announced, microSD Express Card Speed Doubled to 2 GB/s

The SD Association (SDA) announced today the latest development of SD Express memory cards, which has doubled the speed of microSD Express memory cards to 2 GB/s. This represents a significant increase in speed over the previous generation of microSD Express cards, which had a maximum speed of 1 GB/s.

The new microSD Express cards use the PCIe Gen4 x1 lane defined in the recently updated microSD Appendix 8th Edition specification. This allows the cards to achieve speeds of up to 1,969 MB/s, which is comparable to the performance of many solid-state drives (SSDs).

The increased speed of the new microSD Express cards makes them ideal for use in a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, cameras, and drones. The cards can be used to store and transfer large files, such as high-resolution photos and videos, at lightning-fast speeds.

In addition to the new microSD Express speed level, the SDA also announced four new SD Express speed levels. These speed levels are designed to ensure that SD Express memory cards meet a minimum level of performance. The new speed levels are as follows:

  • SD Express Speed Class 1: 400 MB/s
  • SD Express Speed Class 2: 985 MB/s
  • SD Express Speed Class 3: 1,970 MB/s
  • SD Express Speed Class 4: 3,940 MB/s

The new SD Express speed levels are also designed to support multi-stream access and related power management and thermal management features. This will help to ensure that SD Express memory cards deliver stable performance even when under heavy load.

The new SD Express speed level and the new microSD Express speed level are both expected to be supported by new devices in the coming months. The SD Association expects that the new speed levels will help to accelerate the adoption of SD Express memory cards in a wide range of devices.
