Apple Releases New AirTag Firmware Update, But Details Remain Scarce

Apple began rolling out a new firmware update for AirTags today, marking the first update since last October. While the update brings the firmware version to 2.0.73 (build number 2A73), specifics about the changes it brings are currently unavailable.

The previous update in October came with general improvements and bug fixes, and it's likely this update follows suit. Unfortunately, Apple's support document outlining AirTag update release notes hasn't been updated to reflect today's release.

How to Check Your AirTag Firmware Version?

Checking your AirTag's firmware version is a slightly hidden process:

  • Open the Find My app on your iPhone.
  • Select the Items tab from the bottom navigation bar.
  • Choose your AirTag from the list of tracked items.
  • Tap on the name of your AirTag.
  • This will display your AirTag's serial number and current firmware version.
There's no way to manually force an update on your AirTag. The update will download and install automatically as long as your AirTag is within Bluetooth range of your iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later.
