iPhone 16 Pro Models Rumored to Pack a Powerful Punch with On-Device AI and A18 Pro Chipset

While the iPhone 15 series is still relatively new, tech enthusiasts are already setting their sights on the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. Expected to debut in the latter half of 2024, rumors suggest the iPhone 16 will boast significant upgrades, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) thanks to a new A18 Pro chipset.

Reports indicate Apple is planning a four-model iPhone 16 release, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Unlike the iPhone 15 series which offered an A16 chip for the standard models and a separate A17 Pro chip for the Pro variants, analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Tech Research suggests Apple will equip both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus with the standard A18 chip. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, however, are rumored to receive the special A18 Pro chipset with a focus on enhanced on-device AI capabilities.

This shift towards on-device AI processing is attributed to the rumored larger die area of the A18 Pro chip compared to its predecessor, the A17 Pro. A larger die area allows for more transistors and specialized components to be packed into the chip, paving the way for advanced on-device AI features. While this increase in processing power is exciting, it's important to note that a larger die size can also lead to a higher risk of manufacturing defects, potential issues with heat dissipation, and even decreased energy efficiency.

Apple is also expected to adopt a hybrid approach to AI on the iPhone 16. Some AI features might leverage cloud infrastructure, possibly through a partnership with Google, while others could be processed entirely on the device itself.

The rumored Geekbench 6 benchmark scores for the A18 Pro chip are impressive, with a single-core score of 3,500 and a multi-core score of 8,200. These scores hint at a significant performance leap over the previous generation chips.
