Samsung SDI Gears Up for Mass Production of New-Generation Batteries by 2025

Samsung SDI, a major player in the battery industry, announced plans to begin mass production of its next-generation 46xx batteries by early 2025. The company revealed this news at the recently concluded InterBattery 2024 event held in Seoul.

This announcement follows Samsung SDI's revelation in May 2022 that they were developing cylindrical batteries with a standardized 46mm diameter. Yoon Ho Choi, CEO of Samsung SDI, confirmed that the design for these batteries was finalized in 2023, paving the way for mass production.

While details regarding the specific investment amount remain undisclosed, Choi did confirm an increase from last year's allocation.

The exact height of these 46mm diameter batteries remains under wraps. Previous reports hinted at Samsung SDI experimenting with various heights, including 40mm, 60mm, 90mm, and 120mm. It's important to note that the additional digits after the "46" denote the battery's height. For instance, a battery with a 46mm diameter and a 40mm height would be called a 4640 battery.

Tesla currently utilizes 4680 batteries (46mm diameter and 80mm height) in their electric vehicles (EVs). If Samsung SDI decides to include 4680 batteries in their production lineup, it could open doors for supplying both Tesla and other EV manufacturers that utilize this format. This collaboration could significantly benefit the EV industry by increasing battery availability and potentially driving down production costs.

Looking ahead, Samsung SDI also announced their plans for mass producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries by 2026. LFP batteries are known for their stability and long lifespan, making them ideal for applications requiring high durability. The company aims to further push the boundaries by targeting mass production of solid-state batteries by 2027. Solid-state batteries boast superior energy density and faster charging times compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, potentially revolutionizing the future of electric vehicles and portable electronics.

Samsung SDI's commitment to innovation in the battery space positions them as a key player in shaping the future of clean energy solutions. Their upcoming 46xx batteries, coupled with their plans for LFP and solid-state batteries, demonstrate their focus on providing a comprehensive range of battery technologies for the evolving market.
